Rens ZenzileI AM A TOASTMASTER - Rens Zenzile

I am a Toastmaster
I am rooted at the roots of the masters,
Them masters, torn and toasted by the Toastmasters,
I mean I am the speaker, that preach the words through the speeches,
I am a Toastmaster

I speak the words that give birth to CC and CL’s
See me grow, as I climb the ladder, through toastmasters C&L’s
I shall be called a CC, though I should complete my C&L’s
I am a Toastmaster

My program director, program me to be progressive,
For I have the potential, to productively participate in the program,
If the program is given to me and the program is for me,
Then why am I not in the program,
My program director program me to be progressive,
For I am still a Toastmaster
I am Toastmaster

Toastmasters a place for the masters, the place for the ever willing learners
The place to grow and speak your mind
To be rooted in the master’s roots, torn and toasted by Toastmasters,
I say join Toastmaster, for I am, and will for ever be a Toastmaster

Opening our eyes to the blind Print E-mail

Sight impaired Rainbow Nation Toastmasters Club President, Shirley de Bruijn, challenged members to Persevere and Conquer this year. The club’s membership drive in September targeted diversity (gender, race, occupation, disability, disadvantaged, etc.). In addition, the club aims to nurture all people with the potential to be leaders in the community and improve people's skills to serve the community well.

As part of this membership campaign, a press release was sent out explaining how Toastmasters in Southern Africa opens doors to all members of our community, and included a summary of the role of the John Whiffen Golden City Memorial Trust. The resulting article published in the Vereeniging Ster follows.

As a follow-up, the Rainbow Nation Toastmasters Club held a Blind Awareness night at their meeting on 7 October. This timing coincided with World Sight Day (9 October) and the visit of our Area Governor, Jonathan Ramotsei. At the meeting members were given the opportunity to perform their assignments blindfolded, giving them first-hand experience of the challenge of being blind.  A number of the members dared to do this, and Esaian Masilo made sure that his "victims" for Table Topics were blindfolded for their task. Shirley's guide dog, Wicker, was also in attendance. Finally, blindfolds and other goodies were raffled at the end of the evening, raising R250 for the John Whiffen Golden City Memorial Trust.

Currently, two members of the Rainbow Nation Toastmasters Club are supported by the JWGCMT, Shirley de Bruin and Esiain Moseli.

Shirley is sight impaired, yet was recently elected Club President. She has completed a number of assignments under the Competent Leadership programme, including evaluator, um-ah counter, table topic chairman, judging at a club contest, visited other clubs and events, completed a speech, and has been demo speaker at evaluation contests.

Shirley has been instrumental in bringing two new (able-bodied) members into the club and, together with another club member, paid for a further club member to attend the Toastmasters conference in October 2007. Shirley understands the importance of such conferences, having herself benefited from attendance at various conferences which were paid for by the Trust.

Esiain, who is physically impaired and uses crutches, also struggles with speaking and English isn’t his first language. Two club members have been appointed to assist him with preparation and presentation of skills. Currently, Esiain is working on the Advanced Manual Speeches for Management, and on the Competent Leadership manual for meeting leadership.

Esiain has been nominated as a club officer next year, and he has attended two sessions of Club Officer training, and a number TI training sessions. In the Competent Leadership manual Esiain has completed evaluating, a visit to another club, timekeeping, um-ah counter, presenting a speech, assisting with a special event in the club, and assisting with the club contests as a counter and timekeeper.

He has brought two guests to the meetings and attended a Toastmasters conference.
